Menopause and Massage

If you are anything like me, I am sure you relate it to a sports injury or a day at the spa when you think about massage. But what if I told you that it could also benefit women during peri-menopause, menopause and post-menopause?

So why is this, and should we be jumping on this self-care bandwagon? Yes, if you have a bit of spare cash, then I would suggest you do it because massage has the following benefits:

Massage therapy decreases our cortisol levels (stress hormone) by an average of 31%. It increases our levels of serotonin and dopamine (the feel-good hormones) by an average of 28% and 31%, respectively.

During peri-menopause and menopause, women are more likely to suffer from anxiety and depression. Regular massage can help alleviate these symptoms by reducing stress, boosting feel-good hormones and restoring feelings of being able to cope.

Massage will also help us to relax, unwind and reconnect with our bodies and minds.

Regular massage therapy can help reduce any sleep-related symptoms of peri-menopause and menopause by reducing the time it takes to get to sleep and increasing the quality and length of deep sleep. In another study by Zhou et al., massage therapy significantly improved 96% of people with insomnia.

And, of course, you could also incorporate it into the intimate areas of your lives, especially if you are struggling with low libido or vaginal atrophy!

Women must choose a Complementary Health Practitioner with the appropriate training level to enable members of the voluntary government regulator for complementary healthcare in the UK, the Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority and set up by the government to improve standards and safety for the benefit of the public.
