Navigating Allergies During Menopause

Understanding the Connection

Among the Menopause Community Group, questions like, “Why has my skin suddenly started itching?” are frequent. Many don’t realise there’s a direct link between menopause and allergies.

Unfolding the Symptoms

Women usually experience symptoms like coughing, sneezing, and itching, which can progress to bloating and skin sensitivity. The increased sensitivity is attributable to the fluctuation of hormones, particularly estrogen and progesterone, during menopause.

Unravelling the Immune Response

A specific type of immune cell releases histamine, which triggers inflammation and itching. As estrogen and progesterone levels decline during menopause, the activity of these immune cells decreases, heightening the body’s inflammatory response and leading to symptoms like itching, sneezing, sore eyes, and skin sensitivity.

Identifying the Triggers

Identifying culprits related to pollen, food, or cleaning products is often tricky but crucial. It’s helpful to record symptoms and changes like a new shampoo or different food daily.

Adopting Dietary Adjustments

If you suspect a food-related trigger, try eliminating that food group from your diet for a while. Processed foods can often cause numerous issues, so it’s advisable to stick to a balanced diet that includes meat, vegetables, grains, and fruit.

Opting for Hypoallergenic and Natural Products

Switching to hypoallergenic and natural cleaning products can help reduce symptoms. Additionally, wearing sunglasses outdoors and being mindful of pet hair can help.

Considering Supplements and Medication

Various supplements, including apple polyphenols, black seed (Nigella sativa), Vitamin C, Nettle Leaf, and Quercetin, could offer relief. Alternatively, a daily antihistamine might be beneficial. Always consult your healthcare provider to ensure these supplements won’t interfere with your existing medication.
